ɪKS is a cross-shaped pavilion, based on the three St. Andrew’s crosses of Amsterdam’s coat of arms. It consists of three different materials: wood, concrete, and fiberglass. The synthetic forms of concrete and fiberglass are interrupted by the natural wood, which integrates with its surrounding trees. Each material showcases an unique shape, resulting in a composition of distinct forms, textures, colours, plasticity, detailing, and character. In addition to experiencing the folly itself, there is a transition between the folly and the ground level. To create a different tactile experience, rubber tiles are installed in-between the grass and pavilion. By illuminating the folly from within, using artificial light in the evening, the fiberglass form emits a warm glow, while a beam of light emerges from the concrete form.
