Ostadeblok

Ostadeblok

Van Ostadestraat, Amsterdam (NL)

The first impression you perceive of a building is determined by its architectural appearance. It is the recognizable elements, such as the rhythm, use of materials and recognizability of the functions it accommodates. The design of Ostadeblok adopted these principles. From which the mixed-use program and rhythm of the façade with its horizontal and vertical interplay of lines in relation to its context have emerged. This rhythm is formed by the façade openings, combined with masonry piers and a horizontal articulation of concrete slabs with a soldier course brickwork in between. In addition to its appearance, the happiness of its users and residents are not just determined by a good design for their specific spaces, but also by contact with each other. That is why the social cohesion within the building is cultivated according to the concept of ‘groeten en ontmoeten’ (greeting and meeting). The stairwells and corridors are designed to encourage social interactions. And the courtyard and roofs of the elementary school and apartments are designed as communal spaces so that users and residents can come together or recreate.
